The Falkland
Islands farmland extends to around 1,140,000 hectares and carries approximately
530,000 sheep and 6,200 head of cattle. Farming in the Falkland Islands cannot
be compared to farming anywhere else in the world.
The Islands have a raw, natural, windswept beauty. They do not appeal to
everyone, but to those who value the simple things in life and who appreciate
living in a place where nature is still very much in charge, they are quite
simply, stunning!
Farming activity in the Falklands is governed by nature. Long crisp winters and
mild windy summers combine to create rich valley greens, open rolling grasslands
and a freedom from animal pests and diseases unique to the world.
The Falkland Islands sheep produce wool of consistently outstanding whiteness,
soft handle and freedom from vegetable matter contamination. Characteristics
greatly sought after by wool processors and envied by competing wool producing
countries everywhere.
Freedom from sheep external parasites ensures that farmers do not have to treat
sheep. The absence of sheep lice, ked, and sheep blowfly in the Falkland Islands
means that sheep are not dipped or jetted at any stage in their lives. Internal
parasites are not common, so drenching for worms is rare. Growth promotants are
unheard of let alone high impact lot feeding and grain finishing.
The natural cycle of the seasons dictates pasture growth, which, in turn
dictates the animal production system employed. Low stress, low impact, low
input systems working in accord with what nature delivers are the norm on
Falkland Island farms.
Sheep are allowed to roam freely for twelve months of the year. They produce a
wool clip for the islands of approximately 1,780,000 kilograms greasy averaging
about 26 microns. Lambs and surplus sheep aremarketed during the autumn months,
February through to May.
Once again, low stress livestock transport systems are utilised to deliver
animals to the islands EU accredited abattoir. Grass fattened animals, nil use
of growth promotants, state of the art abattoir design and operating procedures
all contribute to the production of Falkland Islands sheep meat with a flavour
and quality that cannot be compared to anywhere else in the world.
